James L. Fitzgibbon (Missouri, 1864-1929) - JAMES FITZGIBBON (1864-1929) OIL ON CANVAS. James L. Fitzgibbon (Missouri, 1864-1929) Kansas City's old City Hall and Market Circa 1900 The late 19th to early 20th century view of Kansas City's Market House and the old City Hall near the City Market is signed lower right front. Born during the Civil War, Fitzgibbon emigrated to Kansas City in 1872. He studied at the National Academy of Design in NYC and the Chicago Art Institute. He served as one of the founding faculty members of the Kansas City Art Association and School of Design, a precursor to the Kansas City Art Institute. In the tradition of this early Kansas City view, his painting 'The Junction' from 1883 depicting the intersection of Main Street and Delaware was showcased at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. A conservator's label verso is dated 2009. Canvas measures 27 x 36 inches.
