PHILOMENE BENNETT (1935-2024) OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD
Philomene Dosek Bennett (1935-2024)
Trees and Golden
Third quarter of the 20th century.
The oil on artist's board with sgraffito technique is signed and titled verso.
Philomene Bennett was an innovative, influential and impactful proponent of the arts in Kansas City for more than four decades. As an artist she was multidisciplinary. As an instructor at the Kansas City Art Institute, her students called her creative energy infectious.
This earlier work composed of various floating biomorphic abstractions diffused by brushed washes is reminiscent of, but different from, Mark Rothko's middle period work from the 1940s.
