JOSEPH FLECK (1892-1977) 1922 OIL ON CANVAS
Joseph Amadeus Fleck (1892-1977)

Portrait of Bertha Kaisler Fleck (1875-1961)

1922

The portrait depicts a seated Bertha Fleck from Kansas City in her full length mink and wearing a strand of pearls, gloves in her hand. The work is signed and dated on the canvas verso.

The artist Joseph Fleck immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s, settling in Kansas City at the home of Bertha Kaisler on Van Brunt Avenue. Bertha sponsored Joseph and, apparently, his older brother whom she married in 1947.

During his time in Kansas City, Joseph Fleck completed a number of important commissions including the portrait of Kansas City Mayor Albert I. Beech in 1924. Fleck exhibited in various shows during those years with other artists in this auction like Coah Henry Ilah Marion Kibbey, Floy Campbell, Elise Hoelzel, Walter Bailey and George Van Millett. He won medals at KCAI exhibitions in the early 1920s and after painting in New Mexico, often exhibited his paintings with Conrad Hug Gallery at 1011A Grand Avenue.
