The daughter of painter and fine art educator Birger Sandzen, Margaret was born in Lindsborg, Kansas and studied at Bethany College earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1932. She then earned a Masters in Art History degree from Columbia University in New York and then spent a year of study in Paris under Edward Leon. Back in Lindsborg, she worked as painter, art teacher and founding benefactor of the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery with its first show in 1957. As an artist, she exhibited widely around the region and beyond. In the 1932 Midwestern Artists Exhibition at the Kansas City Art Institute, a show of 200 pictures, her works hung in the company of Grant Wood, Jackson Pollock as Regionalist, Pollack's brother Charles, other Benton students, Archie Musick and Joseph Meert, Ward Lockwood, Birger Sandzen, John Steuart, Curry, Karl Mattern, Thomas Hart Benton, Fred Shane, Bernard Steffen and many other now famous artists.
