AARON GUNN PYLE (1903-1972) EGG TEMPERA ON CANVAS
Aaron Gunn Pyle (Nebraska 1903-1972)
The Blizzard of '49
Circa 1949
The egg tempera on canvas mounted to panel by the artist is inscribed verso, presumably by family members of the artist. This work is not known to be signed by Aaron Pyle. It was found in the home of the artist's nephew Robert Pyle, who credited his uncle with inspiring him to become an artist. This painting is guaranteed to be the work of Aaron Pyle and offered with a lifetime guarantee of authorship.
The blizzard of November 1948 to February 1949 is described as the worst on record in the northern plains with drifts as high as 30 feet and, heavy biting winds.
Aaron Gunn Pyle described himself as a 'an artist who farms to improve his art' and as a realist. He shunned Modern Art as, 'nothing more than an escape from realities.' His mentor Thomas Hart Benton described him as, ' 'a true regionalist, perhaps closer to being a real one than any of the rest of us, for he lived continually with his subjects.'
Even though he once declined the opportunity to show his paintings because he had chores to do, Aaron Pyle still managed a number of exhibitions in New York at Associated American Artists, the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City and at the Josyln Museum in Omaha.
An unsigned lithograph of this same composition is included with the lot.
The canvas measures 18 x 24 inches.
