Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) Cheyenne Dress Circa 1959 The carefully drafted study in graphite on paper is signed and titled lower right. Study for the Harry S. Truman Library mural. Henry Adams provided the following observations: '' This is a study for a native American woman who stands just behind an American fur trader on the left-hand side of the central part of the Truman Mural. Benton went to great effort to track down genuine Seneca Indians on their reservation in Oklahoma, rather than using white models. As Benton commented: ''It is nearly impossible to simulate Indian bodies by the use of white ones. Benton also went to considerable effort to make his costumes accurate. He told his sister Mildred: ''In painting Indians, if you get one bead on a moccasin that isn't right, you will hear from somebody.''
