Daniel Leroy MacMorris (Missouri, 1893-1981) 1921 The monumental oil on mounted canvas is reminiscent of Taos Art Colony painter and co-founder Ernest Blumenschein ( Star Road and White Sun , 1920); with similarities to fellow member E. Martin Hemmings as well. Similar to those, the foreground is filled by a prominent central figure. A a sunlit genre scene of Native figures around an adobe structure takes place in the background below New Mexican foothills in the distance. During the summers of 1920 and 1921, Daniel MacMorris studied with Taos Art Colony member Leon Gaspard. Gaspard was a Paris-trained Russian-born painter who fused his impressionist leanings with an expressive use of color applied in dynamic brushwork as seen here. This work is signed lower right with the inscription Taos N.M. 1921. The work is displayed in a wide, rustic, Taos School architectural frame with deeply chiseled ornament at the corners and across the top. Board measures 48.5 x 40.75 with a framed size of 58 x 50 inches. Condition Good to very good condition, noting the restoration of a 12-inch tear in the lower left quadrant, visible only in raking light and through examination with under UV light. The canvas has been laid to Masonite. There are areas of inpainting lower left quadrant as well. Provenance A private Kansas collection, obtained from a local family.
