E. OSCAR THALINGER (1885-1965) 1935 OIL ON CANVAS
E. Oscar Thalinger (1885-1965)
Untitled (Factories Across the River)
1935
The composition of foreground figures and industry smokestacks across a river, as seen through elevated rail line girders, is signed and dated lower left front. This is a nice example from the artist's Regionalist period.
Oscar Thallinger studied with Edmund Wuerpel, Frederick Lincoln Stoddard, and Robert Bringhurst at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, Washington University around 1910. A short time later he took a job as registrar at the St. Louis Art museum, a position he held for 40 years. Early in his career as a painter, he focused on urban landscapes and St. Louis landmarks in a Regionalist style. He was teaching at the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony around the time of this painting.
The Ste. Genevieve Art Colony was a popular art collective that flourished from 1932 to 1941 in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. It attracted major artists painting in Social Realism style including Thomas Hart Benton, Joseph Meert, Joe Jones and Joseph Vorst.
