The composition painted in the artist's distinctive style is signed lower left with the artist's designation of membership in the National Academy of Design.
Membership in the National Academy is by invitation only. Artists of a certain caliber are elected by their peers based on merit and significant contributions to American art. The National Academy of Design was founded in 1825 and serves as both an honor society and an educational institution. Membership denotes an artist of accomplishment.
