GEORGE H. SMILLIE (1840-1921) OIL ON CANVAS
George Henry Smillie (1840-1921)
Laundry Day
circa 1880
The pleasant, sunlit plein air American genre scene is signed lower left.
George Smillie came from a family of artists from whom he learned painting and engraving. That influence, and his studies with the celebrated James McDougal Hart,
rooted him deeply in the Hudson Valley School tradition. At age twenty-two, Smillie began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, to which he was elected an associate member in 1864 and a full academician in 1882.
Membership in the National Academy of Design is by invitation only. Artists of a certain caliber are elected by their peers based on merit and significant contributions to American art. The National Academy of Design was founded in 1825 and serves as both an honor society and an educational institution. Membership denotes an artist of accomplishment.
