The Long Haul

The New England logging scene is signed and dated lower left front, titled verso by the label from Milch Galleries, New York.

Hobart Nichols was an American impressionist and tonalist painter who recorded scenes of New England and Hudson River Valley.

His paintings were widely exhibited at institutions such as the Corcoran Gallery, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Art Institute of Chicago.

Hobart Nichols was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the National Arts Club and the National Academy of Design, serving as its president at the time this painting was produced.

Membership in the National Academy is by invitation only. Artists of a certain caliber are elected by their peers based on merit and significant contributions to American art. The National Academy of Design was founded in 1825 and serves as both an honor society and an educational institution. Membership denotes an artist of accomplishment.

Condition
Very good condition, noting one area of inpainting just below the lead horse approximately 1/2 inch, another just below that approximately 1/4 inch and three very small touches to the right of that area. There are no other issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
