JOHN COOLIDGE WPA OIL WITH CALIFORNIA INTERNMENT LABEL
John Earle Coolidge (1882-1947)

American Frontier

Circa 1941

The oil on canvas view of a valley ranch below California foothills is signed lower left front with attribution verso on a label from the Southern California WPA Art Project.

A second label names Clayton Trigg and the WCCA Pomona Assembly Center in Pomona, California. Clayton Triggs was appointed director of the Pomona Assembly Center in May of 1942, the same month listed on the WPA label pasted here. This facility served as a temporary detention camp for Japanese Americans during World War II.

The presence of both labels on the painting aligns with the broader mission of the WPA's Federal Art Project to make art accessible in public spaces, including schools, hospitals, and other government facilities.

This painting underscores the multifaceted applications of WPA art projects and offers insight into the cultural landscape of the era.

John Earle Coolidge (1882 - 1947) was an American artist known for his landscape paintings and illustrations. Born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, he studied at Stanford in 1905, then back in Pennsylvania under famed American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anschutz, Cecilia Beaux, and J. Francis Smith. In 1909, Coolidge relocated to Los Angeles where he opened a studio for commercial art and became a member of the California Art Club and later taught at the Otis Art Institute.
