JEAN AUBERT-GRIS (1881-1972) ATTRIBUTED OIL ON CANVAS
To complete the sale of property from this estate, a watercolor by Alexis Gritchenko and a charcoal by Augustus Edwin John are included with this lot:

1. Jean Aubert-Gris (1881-1972) attributed oil on canvas. The atmospheric interior scene portrays a tabletop still life with green terra cotta jug and flowers accompanied by a Limoges box, leather book and plate with Asian motif. The work is faintly signed upper right front and attributed by style, subject and visible portions of the signature to the French artist Jeanne Marcelle Aubert-Gris (1881-1972).

2. Alexis Gritchenko (France/Ukraine, 1883-1977) Bridge over River, Turkey (1920). The watercolor with gouache on brown paper is signed and dated lower right.

3. Augustus Edwin John (United Kingdom, 1878-1961) Madonna (1939). Charcoal on paper, signed lower right. A letter with this lot on letterhead from the artist's studio reads: My Dear Mrs Cazalet, Do you think The Queen would sit for me at Windsor week-ends for an informal portrait? It would be wonderful if she would and I would have it in my show in America which Francis Taylor is organising. I would stay in some pub and no doubt there's a suitable room in the castle for painting. If she had a pretty costume with a hat I'm sure it would be a success and probably put Poppet in the shade. Please, please, propose it to Her Majesty. Francis Taylor is taking all my beloved drawings and things away (many of which I tore up by-the-by in a fit of madness, but he has pieced them together again!) Yours affectionately, Augustus.
