The atmospheric, sunlit landscape divided by a wood rail fence is signed lower left front.
Henry Ward Ranger was a prominent American painter known for his tonalist style of landscape painting. From his studies in Europe, he was heavily influenced by the Barbizon School. In the US, he founded the legendary Old Lyme Art Colony, one of the most influential in American art history.
