The subtly Modernist oil with foreground figures and a distant view composed in flat planes of pleasing colors is signed lower right and titled verso by the F.B. Horowitz Fine Art, Ltd gallery label dated 1938/32.
Leon Kroll was a WPA muralist and member of the National Academy of Design who, when at his best, is known for luminous paintings with a strong composition - like this painting. His work has been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
