The social realist cityscape is signed along the lower edge, to the left of center. It is a classic WPA-era depiction rich with narrative and movement in the manner that Bibel was known for. He also painted pictures that highlighted the struggles of workers, and the politics of protest during the Great Depression. By some reports, he himself was arrested for protesting cuts to the Federal Art Project.
Beginning in 1936, Leon Bibel lived and worked in New York as a WPA artist with the Federal Art Project at the Harlem Community Art Center.
A few years after this canvas was painted, Bibel took to poultry farming because, as he put it, .' we wanted to eat.' It wasn't until around 1960 that he would resume painting again with any consistency.
