WALTER TEAGUE BLUE MIRROR MODEL 558 FOR SPARTON RADIO - This, the more elaborate model of Sparton's blue mirrored 'sled' tabletop radio, boasts a number of features not found on the model's companion model. This example designed by the American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague has cobalt mirrored plates front, top and left end; the top and front are reverse engraved and reverse painted with striking Art Deco motif incorporating black bands against the blue mirror plate. The front, with four knobs, is similarly decorated. The right end, with its chrome wrap-around 'speed lines', retains the original faux silver foil finish on the wood behind its five chrome bands that create the case's streamlined effect. The operating condition is not known. Walter Dorwin Teague (1883-1960) was an influential American industrial designer responsible for iconic American radio, camera, automobile, piano, office machine, railroad car, World's Fair building, piano case and art glass designs.
