WALTER DORWIN TEAGUE MOD 556 BLUEBIRD FOR SPARTON RADIO
The Bluebird is an outstanding and innovative example of Art Deco design influence. It rises above the typical motifs of stepped, geometric, angular and flat edged designs, as seen in the majority of Art Deco architecture and objects of the 1920s and 1930s. The design of this radio steps away from all of that with its repeated, offset circular motifs, some of which are sharply bisected through with three horizontal 'speed line' beams that convey a modern streamline effect - all shiny and sleek. These are punctuated by the contrasting of chrome on silvery reflective blue, which is further punctuated by the coal black ball shape feet it stands on. The design characterizes Walter Dorwin Teague's trademark penchant for representing optimistic, upbeat, celebratory and dynamic energies in his designs. Even the name Bluebird is upbeat and cheerful. It's worth noting that a group of bluebirds is sometimes referred to as a Bliss of Bluebirds.

Walter Dorwin Teague (1883-1960) was an influential American industrial designer responsible for iconic American radio, camera, automobile, piano, office machine, railroad car, World's Fair building, piano case and art glass designs.
