RARE INTERESTING STEINITE LABORATORIES 1-TUBE RECEIVER - Steinite Laboratories, Atchison, Kans., Type 25-1, one tube radio receiver, circa early 1920s. The operating condition is unknown. A unique feature of the Bob Lane collection is the number of rare and early units made by small Midwest manufacturers, like this Steinite Laboratories Type 25-1 one tube radio receiver manufactured in a small Kansas town. Steinite Laboratories was a small early radio manufacturing company based in Atchison, Kansas that played a significant role in the development of radio technology in the 1920s. The company was founded by Fred Stein who learned electrical calibration and repair at his job with the Atchison Railway Light and Power Company in the early 1900s. He later formed the Atchison Radio & Electric company in 1921 and began experimenting with 'wireless phones, ' as early radios were known at the time. The company was initially listed as a manufacturer of crystal sets in radio trade directories 1924 and 1925. In mid-1925, Steinite acquired the remnants of Tri-City Electrical Supply Co. (Tresco, a Midwest company also represented in this auction), which influenced some of their radio designs as the industry transitioned from crystal sets to vacuum tube radios, with the onset of commercial radio broadcasting. While developing his own methods for analyzing the moisture content of wood to be used in his radio cases, Fred Stein also developed (and presumably patented) valuable methods to test moisture levels in food, grains and seeds. The Steinlite Corporation in Atchison still operates today and states the following on their web site's ABOUT page: 'We have been manufacturing dielectric (capacitance) type grain moisture meters here in Atchison, Kansas since 1931, when Mr. Stein invented the technology. Dielectric moisture testers are fast and accurate. They do not destroy the sample they test. They are widely used in the grain and agricultural industry to determine how much moisture is in a sample and whether the material will need to be dried…' Measures 8 inches long.
