Bidspirit auction | Rare 17th–18th Century Polish–Hungarian Karabela

Rare 17th–18th Century Polish–Hungarian Karabela Saber with Engraved Blade - A rare Central European karabela-type saber, likely Polish or Hungarian, dating to the 17th–18th century. The weapon displays the distinctive strongly curved blade and simple crossguard associated with Eastern European cavalry sabers of the period. The broad single-edged steel blade is deeply curved and formed with multiple narrow fullers running along its length. Both sides of the blade show period engraved floral and foliate decoration near the forte, now softened by age and oxidation. The iron crossguard has long straight quillons and a raised central reinforcement extending onto the blade and grip. The hilt is fitted with a dark ribbed grip, likely later leather-covered or restored, terminating in the characteristic angular pommel form associated with karabela and related Polish-Hungarian saber traditions.A substantial and visually impressive early saber with strong Central European character. The combination of the deeply curved multi-fullered blade, engraved decoration, and austere crossguard construction suggests a 17th to early 18th century Polish–Hungarian military or nobleman’s weapon.Condition: Good antique condition considering age. Extensive age-related patina, oxidation, pitting, and surface wear throughout the blade and iron fittings. Engraved decoration remains visible. Grip covering shows wear and may be an old replacement or restoration. No scabbard present. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 39 3/4”, Blade length : 34 3/4” and 1 1/2” wide.
