Fine 18th–19th Century Hungarian Aristocratic Officer’s Saber with Decorated Grip & Gilt Mounts - A highly decorative Hungarian aristocratic or senior officer’s saber, dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, displaying the refined workmanship and luxurious ornament associated with high-status Central European arms. The saber features a broad, gently curved steel blade with a long central fuller and polished surfaces. The hilt is especially elaborate, with a finely cast and chased gilt-bronze guard incorporating foliate ornament, a twisted quillon, and applied decorative devices. The grip is fitted with light-colored grip scales, secured by floral-form studs and bordered with fine beaded decoration, terminating in an ornate metal pommel cap. The sword retains its exceptionally decorative scabbard, covered in dark leather or textile and mounted with extensive gilt-bronze repoussé and chased fittings, including multiple suspension mounts, rings, floral scrollwork, and a richly ornamented drag. The level of embellishment strongly suggests a ceremonial or courtly weapon intended for an officer or nobleman rather than ordinary field service. The combination of the pistol-form grip, elaborate gilt hilt, richly decorated scabbard, and overall Hungarian form makes this an especially attractive and uncommon example. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 38”, Blade length : 30 1/2”. For additional images please visit sofedesignauctions.com Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
