19th Century Prussian German Model 1852 Cavalry Saber with Regimental Markings - A Prussian Model 1852 cavalry saber, dating to the second half of the 19th century, with a substantial slightly curved steel blade and characteristic pierced iron basket hilt. The blade is formed with broad longitudinal fullers and terminates in a spear-form point. The ricasso bears Prussian military issue / regimental markings, indicating its service history. German military swords of this period were frequently stamped with unit and weapon numbers, allowing individual arms to be identified with the regiment or formation to which they were issued. The iron hilt is of characteristic M1852 cavalry pattern, constructed with a pierced multi-bar guard, forward-curving quillon terminating in a disc-shaped finial, and a ribbed grip retaining its dark covering. The Model 1852 was introduced for Prussian cavalry and remained in service through the major German conflicts of the later 19th century, with the pattern subsequently modified as the M1852/79. The sword displays considerable age and service wear, including patination, oxidation and surface discoloration to the blade and hilt, consistent with an extensively carried military weapon.
