Antique Indian / Himalayan Buddhist Khakkhara Ritual Staff Finial with Rings, 18th Century - An unusual antique Indian or Himalayan Buddhist khakkhara (ringed ritual staff) fitting, of forged iron construction. The elongated faceted body is decorated with simple incised geometric and foliate details and terminates in an architectural openwork section supporting a cluster of freely suspended iron rings. The ringing elements are characteristic of the khakkhara, the Buddhist pilgrim’s or monk’s staff traditionally associated with itinerant monks and ritual practice. When the staff was moved, its suspended metal rings produced an audible sound. The present example appears to be the ornamental upper fitting or finial from such a staff, rather than a complete staff. Of substantial hand-forged construction, with a dark aged surface, oxidation, scattered pitting and wear consistent with considerable age. The individual rings remain attached and freely articulated. An interesting early example of Buddhist ritual metalwork, likely 18th–19th century, possibly earlier. Total length: 8 1/2”.
