Fine Indo-Persian Zirah Kulah Chain Mail Coif, 18th Century - A fine Indo-Persian chain mail head defense, or zirah kulah, dating to approximately the 18th century or possibly earlier. Constructed of densely assembled iron rings forming a complete protective hood extending over the head, sides of the face, neck and shoulders. The mail is of notably fine and closely woven construction, with the crown gathered beneath a circular iron reinforcing plate pierced around its perimeter and secured directly to the mail. The plate is surmounted by a tall tapered tubular fitting, likely intended as a plume or decorative finial holder. The facial opening is shaped to provide protection along the forehead and cheeks, with a narrow pendant section of mail descending over the center of the face. The substantial length of mail at the rear and sides forms an effective aventail protecting the neck and upper shoulders. Overall oxidation and age-related patination are consistent with considerable age, while the density and quality of the mail make this an especially attractive example of Indo-Persian defensive armor.
