Fine 18th–19th Century Mughal Indian Tabar Axe with Wootz Blade, Gold Koftgari & Concealed Thrusting Blade - A fine and unusual 18th–19th century Mughal Indian tabar axe, constructed of steel and fitted with a broad crescent-form wootz steel blade. The axe head is richly embellished with gold koftgari decoration, including scrolling borders and stylized ornamental motifs, with additional gilt decoration extending onto the socket, upper haft and terminal. Of particular interest is the hollow haft, which conceals a long, slender thrusting blade terminating in an elaborate gilt zoomorphic handle formed as a coiled serpent or dragon. Considerably longer than a conventional dagger, this secondary weapon is better understood as a concealed spike or spear-like blade intended for thrusting use. The principal axe blade exhibits visible watered wootz patterning beneath the surface patina. Gold decoration remains extensively preserved, with expected age-related rubbing, oxidation and surface wear. A particularly decorative and mechanically interesting example of Mughal arms workmanship combining a tabar battle axe with a concealed secondary blade.
