Fine 19th Century Indian Ankus Elephant Goad - A fine antique Indian ankus, or elephant goad, of traditional form, comprising a long reddish-brown wooden haft 23 1/2 inches long fitted with an iron head. The head incorporates a long faceted spear-form spike measuring approximately 8 inches and a strongly curved side hook measuring approximately 4 inches, together with a smaller inward-curving secondary hook beneath. The ironwork is carefully shaped and finished with simple incised geometric decoration, including linear and chevron motifs along the spike and hook. The tapered wooden haft is secured with iron pins and terminates in a rounded pommel. The ankus was traditionally used by a mahout for directing and controlling elephants and also developed into a symbol of authority and status in India.
