British Pattern 1873 Martini-Henry Yataghan Sword Bayonet with Scabbard - British Pattern 1873 sword bayonet, produced by conversion of the earlier Pattern 1856/58/60 yataghan-form bayonet for use with the Martini-Henry service rifle. The type was officially adopted in 1873, with large numbers of earlier sword bayonets subsequently altered for the Martini-Henry system. The substantial steel blade has the characteristic recurved yataghan profile, broad central fuller and spear-form point. The ricasso bears British military inspection and issue markings, including the War Department broad arrow, together with additional stamped acceptance/inspection marks. The iron crossguard incorporates the muzzle ring and terminates in a downturned circular quillon. The grip is fitted with checkered black composition or leather scales, secured by metal rivets, with steel pommel and bayonet locking mechanism. Accompanied by its black leather scabbard with metal throat and chape, showing age, oxidation and surface wear. The blade retains a comparatively bright surface with scattered staining and minor oxidation, while the guard, pommel and scabbard mounts exhibit a dark aged patina. Overall a good, complete example of the long British yataghan sword-bayonet form associated with the Martini-Henry period. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 28 1/2”, Blade length : 22 3/4”.
