19th Century Tibetan or Himalayan Sword with Gilt-Brass Makara Hilt and Repoussé Scabbard - A distinctive 19th century Tibetan or Himalayan sword, fitted with an elaborate cast and chased brass hilt incorporating a fierce makara or dragon-like zoomorphic mask, its open jaws embracing the base of the blade. The grip terminates in a pierced vajra-form pommel, reinforcing the weapon’s Tibetan Buddhist character. The long steel blade is essentially straight with a slight curvature toward the point, showing a broad cutting edge and substantial spine. The surface retains scattered oxidation, staining and age-related patination. Accompanied by its original or period scabbard, completely faced in embossed metal decorated with dense scrolling floral and cloud-like motifs. A colorful woven suspension strap remains attached near the throat. The combination of the vajra terminal, fantastic animal imagery and richly worked scabbard is strongly consistent with Tibetan/Himalayan ceremonial and status weapons of the 19th century. The sword presents considerably more ornament than a standard utilitarian Tibetan sidearm and was likely intended as a prestige or ceremonial weapon. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 23”, Blade length : 18”. For additional images please visit sofedesignauctions.com Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
