Fine 18th–Early 19th Century Indian Firangi Sword with Wootz Steel Blade, Silver & Gold Koftgari Hilt and Scabbard - A particularly attractive Indian firangi sword, dating to the 18th to early 19th century, mounted with a long straight steel blade showing a visible watered surface consistent with wootz steel. The blade is of substantial proportions, tapering gradually toward the point and formed with pronounced longitudinal fullering/ribbing through much of its length. Near the forte is a distinctive crosshatched panel or arsenal-type marking. The elaborate all-steel hilt is of characteristic firangi form, incorporating a broad guard with pierced and shaped elements, protective knuckle bow, disc-shaped pommel and the traditional curved terminal spike. The grip and adjoining mounts are richly decorated with silver koftgari floral and foliate ornament, accented by small gold-toned floral centers and additional gilt decoration. The combination of silver and gold against the darkened steel produces a particularly fine effect. Pierced decoration to the guard further enhances the unusually elaborate character of the mounting. Accompanied by a fitted textile-covered scabbard decorated in repeating red, cream and dark geometric and floral motifs with applied trim. The sword displays age-consistent wear, scattered oxidation and minor surface losses to the precious-metal decoration, while retaining a substantial amount of its original ornamental work. The scabbard shows expected wear and some losses to the textile covering. Please examine photographs carefully for condition. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 42 1/2”, Blade length : 32 1/2”. For additional images please visit sofedesignauctions.com Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
