18th Century Persian or Syrian Shamshir with Damascus Steel Blade - An antique Persian or Syrian shamshir of characteristic deeply curved form, mounted with a broad single-edged Damascus or watered steel blade tapering gradually toward a narrow upswept point. The blade displays a subtle patterned surface and bears a small decorative cartouche or maker’s device with traces of gilt decoration. The sword is fitted with a traditional dark horn grip terminating in a hooked pommel and an iron crossguard with long straight quillons and extended langets. The guard retains an age-developed surface with scattered oxidation and pitting. Accompanied by its fitted curved scabbard covered in dark brown leather and mounted with two iron suspension bands, each incorporating a hanging ring. The leather shows considerable age, wear, cracking, and surface losses. The pronounced curvature and hilt configuration are consistent with the shamshir tradition of Persia and the broader Middle Eastern region, including Syria.
