Ornate 19th Century Indian Ankus Elephant Goad with Gilded Decoration - A finely decorated 19th-century Indian ankus, or elephant goad, of ceremonial quality. The iron head is formed with a broad projecting point and a deeply curved hook, both extensively ornamented with gilded floral and foliate decoration against a darkened ground. The central panel of the head is decorated with figural and vegetal motifs, while the neck carries additional scrolling ornament. The haft incorporates a pale bone or ivory-colored grip section divided by incised ring bands, with an iron terminal fitting and leather suspension thong. The ankus served as the traditional implement of the mahout for directing elephants and, in more elaborate forms such as this, also functioned as a symbol of status and authority. The rich surface decoration and unusually sculptural head distinguish this example from more utilitarian forms.
