19th Century Ottoman Balkan Islamic Dagger with Engraved Blade and Scabbard - An attractive 19th-century Ottoman Balkan dagger featuring a long, straight, double-edged steel blade tapering to an acute point. Both faces of the blade are extensively decorated with finely incised geometric and foliate ornament, including starburst, interlaced, lattice, and linear motifs extending nearly the full length. The dark metal hilt is of distinctive waisted form with a broad flaring pommel and is similarly decorated with engraved geometric designs. The dagger retains its original or period scabbard, incorporating engraved metal mounts and a textile-covered central section. The metal fittings are richly ornamented with geometric panels, stylized floral devices, and radiating motifs, with a suspension ring fitted near the throat. The decoration and construction reflect the strong Islamic artistic vocabulary found throughout the Ottoman Balkans during the 19th century. Considerable age-related surface wear, oxidation, discoloration, rubbing to the engraved decoration, and deterioration to the textile covering are present.
