19th Century Indian Tegha Executionerâs Sword - A large and imposing 19th-century Indian tegha, or heavy cutting sword, traditionally associated with execution and ceremonial use. The weapon features a very broad, strongly curved single-edged steel blade widening toward the point and terminating in a pronounced upswept tip. The forte is richly decorated with finely engraved floral and foliate ornament, with traces of gold-colored decoration remaining within portions of the design. The all-steel hilt is of characteristic Indo-Persian form, with integral grip, projecting quillons, circular disc guard, and a knuckle bow terminating in a stylized finial. Additional engraved floral decoration appears on the guard and hilt. The blade shows substantial age and use, with scattered oxidation, staining, surface pitting, and areas of polishing. The decorated forte retains considerably more patina than the forward portion of the blade. The hilt likewise exhibits age-related wear and oxidation.
