Bidspirit auction | Ornate 19th Century Indo-Persian Tabar

Ornate 19th Century Indo-Persian Tabar Battle Axe - An elaborate 19th-century Indo-Persian tabar battle axe constructed entirely in steel. The broad crescent-shaped axe blade is extensively engraved on both faces with dense floral, foliate, and scrolling decoration. The axe is fitted with a long steel haft terminating in a rounded cap. Opposite the principal blade is a substantial tapering rear spike. The central socket and adjoining mounts are likewise engraved, while the upper portion incorporates a distinctive stylized zoomorphic or dragon-form finial. The combination of crescent blade, rear spike, all-steel construction, and extensive engraved ornament is characteristic of Indo-Persian ceremonial and martial axes of the 19th century. The surface retains a dark age patina with oxidation, scattered pitting, and general wear consistent with age. India/Persia, 19th century. Total length : 28 3/4”, Blade length : 8” x 4 1/2”.
