ANTIQUE 19TH C. NEW CALEDONIA KANAK BIRD BEAK MACE CLUB - Antique New Caledonian Kanak bird-beak mace or war club, 19th century. A distinctive traditional Oceanic weapon carved entirely of wood, featuring the characteristic massive head formed with a long, sharply projecting bird-beak profile. The sculptural head is carved with a pronounced central ridge and raised boss to either side, giving the weapon its characteristic avian appearance. The long cylindrical shaft terminates in a carved grip with diagonal grooved decoration. The area immediately beneath the head retains old contrasting fiber binding. Bird-beak clubs of this distinctive form are associated with the indigenous Kanak people of New Caledonia and represent one of the most recognizable forms of traditional New Caledonian weaponry. The wood displays a deep, naturally developed brown patina with surface wear, abrasions, small losses and age-related checking. Several small old holes and areas of wear are visible to the head. Fiber binding shows expected age and deterioration. Overall presenting with considerable age and ethnographic character. Total length: 29”, Blade length : 12 1/2” x 5”.
