IMPERIAL JAPANESE TYPE 32 MILITARY SABER, MATCHING NUMBERS - Imperial Japanese Type 32 military saber, dating from the late Meiji through early Showa period and of the pattern used by the Imperial Japanese Army from the turn of the 20th century through the World War II era. The saber features a machine-made, slightly curved steel blade with broad fuller and clipped-point configuration. The ricasso is stamped with serial number 88966. Of particular importance, the steel scabbard is stamped with the matching serial number 88966, indicating that the sword and scabbard have remained together as an originally numbered set. Steel hilt with characteristic pierced guard and integral knuckle bow. The grip retains its distinctive molded/checkered surface treatment with remnants of the original finish. A leather finger loop remains within the guard, a feature frequently missing from surviving examples. The steel scabbard is fitted with a single suspension ring and integral drag. The Type 32 was introduced at the end of the 19th century and remained in Japanese military service for decades, with examples continuing in use into the World War II period. Unlike traditionally forged Japanese swords, Type 32 sabers were arsenal-manufactured military weapons and were individually serial numbered on both the sword and corresponding scabbard.
