APANESE EDO TANTO KOSHIRAE WITH KOGATANA - Antique Japanese tanto koshirae, Edo period, comprising a complete set of sword mounts fitted with a wooden tsunagi in place of the blade and retaining its accompanying kogatana utility knife. The mounting is executed in an elegant aikuchi-style configuration without a conventional tsuba. The tsuka is covered entirely in pale samegawa with attractive natural mottling and fitted with dark lacquered fittings. A circular gilt-metal ornament with a stylized floral mon is mounted to the side of the grip. The black lacquer saya has a finely textured surface and incorporates a pocket for the kogatana. The kozuka is particularly attractive, with a finely textured dark ground decorated with a series of applied mixed-metal floral blossoms, retaining traces of gilt and copper-colored surface decoration. The kogatana blade remains present and shows age-related oxidation and patination. The restrained black lacquer saya combined with the exposed samegawa grip and floral metalwork gives the mounting a particularly refined appearance characteristic of civilian tanto fittings. Fitted with a shaped wooden tsunagi in place of the original tanto blade. NO MAIN STEEL BLADE IS PRESENT. The lot consists of the koshirae, wooden tsunagi, kozuka and kogatana only.
