JAPANESE EDO WAKIZASHI KOSHIRAE WITH DECORATED IRON TSUBA - Antique Japanese wakizashi koshirae, Edo period, comprising a complete set of sword mounts fitted with a wooden tsunagi in place of the blade. The tsuka is traditionally mounted with pale samegawa and black tsuka-ito in diamond-pattern wrap. Decorative menuki in dark metal with gilt details are visible beneath the wrapping. The dark fuchi is finely decorated in gold with a flowering branch motif, providing an attractive contrast to the otherwise restrained black mounting. Of particular interest is the iron tsuba, of rounded form with an irregular pierced opening and decorated in mixed-metal inlay depicting flowering branches and foliage. The iron surface retains an aged dark brown patina with visible traces of copper-colored and lighter metal inlay. The saya is finished in understated black lacquer with a fine textured surface, fitted with a glossy black kurikata and matching fittings. The restrained black saya contrasts effectively with the more detailed fittings of the hilt and tsuba. The koshirae is fitted with a shaped wooden tsunagi, preserving the form and alignment of the mounting. NO STEEL BLADE IS PRESENT.
