FINE JAPANESE EDO WAKIZASHI KOSHIRAE MOUNTS, NO BLADE - Fine antique Japanese wakizashi koshirae, Edo period, comprising an attractive and unusually well-preserved set of sword mounts presented with a wooden tsunagi in place of the blade. The tsuka is traditionally constructed with white samegawa beneath brown tsuka-ito in conventional diamond-pattern wrapping. Decorative dark metal menuki with gilt highlights are visible beneath the wrap. The fuchi and kashira are particularly attractive, finished in dark shakudo-like surfaces with fine linear gold decoration, the kashira incorporating a shaped gilt panel. Mounted with an iron sukashi tsuba of rounded form, pierced and worked with an architectural or geometric design and retaining a dark aged patina. The saya is especially decorative, finished in a rich reddish-brown lacquer with a subtly textured surface and embellished with repeated gilt five-petal plum-blossom mon (ume). The scabbard fittings are dark finished with gold-lined decoration corresponding closely with the fittings of the tsuka. Complete with matching kurikata and a substantial gold-colored sageo tied around the upper portion of the saya. The quality and consistent decorative treatment of the mounts give the koshirae a particularly handsome and cohesive appearance.A wooden tsunagi occupies the blade cavity and maintains the assembled form.
