COLLECTION OF 8 ANTIQUE JAPANESE SWORD KASHIRA FITTINGS - Collection of eight antique Japanese sword kashira, or pommel caps, for katana and wakizashi mounts. Edo to Meiji period, primarily 19th century and possibly including earlier examples. The group comprises a variety of iron, copper-alloy and dark-patinated metal fittings displaying differing Japanese metalworking and decorative techniques.Several are particularly decorative, including an example worked in high relief with a dragon amid swirling clouds or waves with gilt accents; another with a deeply modeled sinuous creature or dragon; an example with a textured, scale-like surface; and others decorated with landscape, floral and traditional Japanese motifs, some retaining traces of gilt or contrasting metal inlay. Several incorporate the openings and internal fittings associated with attachment to the tsuka.
