Japanese Samurai Kabuto Helmet, Late Edo Period, 19th Century - Antique Japanese samurai helmet, or kabuto, dating to the 19th century, late Edo period. Constructed with a rounded iron bowl fitted with numerous vertical ribs and rows of raised rivets, surmounted by a decorative gilt-metal tehen-kanamono fitting at the crown. The helmet retains broad shaped side and rear plates with gilt-metal edging and decorative mounts, together with additional brass and gilt-metal fittings throughout. The exterior is finished in a dark brown lacquered surface, showing age-related wear and losses. Decorative gilt-metal elements include scalloped borders, floral-form mounts and pierced details. Suspension ring fitting present to the rear. Interior retains a blue textile lining with visible wear and losses. Some original textile and attachment elements remain, with areas of deterioration, separation and old repair consistent with age and use. A visually striking example of late Japanese samurai armor, combining traditional iron construction with elaborate decorative metalwork.
