19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Dao Fighting Knife - Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th century. A substantial fighting knife or short dao featuring a broad, slightly curved single-edged steel blade widening through the forward portion and terminating in an upswept point. The blade exhibits an aged gray surface with scattered oxidation, staining and evidence of period use. Fitted with a small oval metal guard accented by parallel brass bands. The waisted wooden grip is deeply carved with an overall crosshatched diamond pattern and fitted with metal ferrules at the base and pommel. A robust example of a traditional Chinese civilian sidearm, its broad blade configuration relating to the diverse family of single-edged dao employed throughout Qing-period China.
