ANTIQUE CHINESE LATE QING DRAGON DECORATED JIAN SWORD - China, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890–1910. An attractive antique Chinese jian, or straight double-edged sword, dating to the closing years of the Qing Dynasty. The substantial straight steel blade is of traditional double-edged form, tapering to a point and decorated on both faces with gold-colored engraved ornament, including a finely rendered Chinese dragon, auspicious motifs and Chinese characters. Fitted with an elaborate pierced brass guard displaying openwork floral decoration and shaped scrolling terminals. The dark hardwood grip is of waisted form with incised geometric decoration and terminates in a shaped brass pommel pierced with a floral motif. Complete with its blackened wooden scabbard, decorated with incised Chinese characters and auspicious motifs and mounted with pierced and engraved brass fittings. The scabbard retains suspension loops and an elongated brass chape decorated with pierced floral ornament. A visually striking example of a late Qing Chinese jian, combining traditional sword construction with extensive decorative metalwork and auspicious imagery.
