ANTIQUE 19TH C. TIBETAN SILVER, TURQUOISE & CORAL MECHAG FIRE STARTER POUCH - Antique Tibetan fire-starting pouch or tinder pouch, known as a mechag, mechak or chuckmuck, 19th century. Of traditional rectangular leather construction, extensively mounted with chased and repoussé silver-colored metalwork and fitted along the lower edge with a broad steel striker used for producing sparks with a piece of flint. The richly decorated front incorporates repoussé floral ornament and a particularly attractive lower register of running animals, possibly deer or horses, amid scrolling vegetation. The center is applied with three raised floral-form mounts set with a larger turquoise cabochon flanked by two red coral-colored cabochons. Additional repoussé floral panels occupy the corners. The upper edge is fitted with a series of engraved or crosshatched brass mounts, an iron suspension ring, brass fitting and surviving leather suspension straps. Size: 6” x 3 1/8”, Blade: 6” x 0 3/4”.
