18TH-19TH C. INDO-PERSIAN SILVER-DECORATED FLINTLOCK RIFLE - 18TH-19TH C. INDO-PERSIAN SILVER-DECORATED FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Antique Indo-Persian flintlock long rifle, India, late 18th to early 19th century. Of exceptionally elongated form, with a long steel barrel mounted to a dark hardwood full stock and fitted with an iron ramrod. The rifle is equipped with an iron flintlock mechanism with external cock, frizzen and pan, the lock mounted against a shaped iron side plate. The slender hardwood stock terminates in a characteristic flared butt and incorporates a simple iron trigger and suspension ring. The barrel and stock are ornamented at intervals with gold-colored inlaid and applied decoration, comprising stylized scrolling, linear and foliate motifs. The decorative panels continue along the considerable length of the fore-stock and toward the muzzle, providing a restrained contrast against the dark wood and patinated metal surfaces. The barrel is retained to the stock by broad wrapped bands. Indian gunmakers continued to produce traditional long guns alongside firearms fitted with European-derived flintlock mechanisms during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Comparable Indian flintlock muskets combine long barrels, hardwood stocks, iron ramrods and imported or European-style lock mechanisms. Total length: 61 1/2”.
