VERY ATTRACTIVE 17TH C. STYLE CONTINENTAL MUSKETEER'S LARGE POWDER FLASK - Very attractive Continental European musketeer's powder flask in the late 16th to early 17th century style. Of large triangular form, the body covered in rich crimson-red velvet and mounted with an elaborate pierced and relief-decorated gilt-metal framework. The front is richly ornamented with scrolling foliate arabesques and figural decoration, centered by an embracing male and female couple standing beneath a draped canopy, flanked below by reclining female figures and further masks and figural motifs incorporated into the surrounding openwork. The elaborate decoration is particularly striking against the contrasting red velvet ground. Fitted at the top with a rectangular metal closure and tall turned powder nozzle with chained stopper. Red suspension cord and tassel elements remain attached along the sides. The construction and overall design derive from the elaborate triangular powder flasks carried by Continental European musketeers during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Showing attractive age-related patination and wear to the metal surfaces, with wear and losses to the textile consistent with age. An unusually decorative example with strong display presence.
