RARE 19th CENTURY HMONG SOUTHEAST ASIAN ”MONKEY GUN” MUSKET - Hmong / Laotian Southeast Asian muzzle-loading hunting musket, commonly referred to by collectors as a ”monkey gun”, likely late 19th century. Of traditional indigenous manufacture, the gun features a long iron barrel mounted to a slender hardwood stock with a simple external ignition mechanism. Fitted with iron hardware and small decorative brass stock inlays. Particularly interesting is the original field apparatus accompanying the gun, including the long folding iron support or rest, chain and ring fittings, cordage, and suspended container. A brass ramrod is retained beneath the stock. Large iron ring mounted at the butt. These lightweight, locally manufactured firearms were traditionally used by Hmong and other upland peoples of mainland Southeast Asia, particularly in areas of present-day Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, primarily as hunting arms.
