ANTIQUE LATE 18TH, EARLY 19TH C. SPANISH MIQUELET FLINTLOCK PISTOL - Antique Spanish miquelet-lock pistol, likely late 18th to early 19th century. Featuring a characteristic external patilla-type flintlock mechanism with exposed mainspring, cock and steel, mounted to a shaped walnut full stock terminating in a rounded pommel. The stock is extensively ornamented with applied and inlaid brass decoration comprising scrolling foliate motifs, with additional engraved brass furniture decorating the fore-end and muzzle area. The rounded pommel is particularly elaborate, decorated with pierced and engraved brass scrollwork centered by a floral rosette. Steel barrel with turned molding at the muzzle and engraved linear decoration near the breech. Barrel bears stamped maker's/proof marks. The pistol displays the distinctive combination of miquelet mechanism, walnut stock and richly applied metal ornament associated with Spanish gunmaking traditions of the period. Similar Spanish miquelet pistols were produced by important gunmaking centers including Eibar and Ripoll. Overall length: 12 1/2 in.
