VLADIMIR CHUB (RUSSIAN/UZBEK, B. 1940) OIL PAINTING ”AUTUMN”, 1986 - Vladimir Chub (Russian/Uzbek, b. 1940), ”Autumn” (”Осен&Nt ilde;Œ”), 1986. Oil on board. Signed lower left. Inscribed and dated on the reverse and retaining an original label from the Central Salon of the Art Fund of Uzbekistan, Tashkent. An expressive autumn landscape executed in Chub’s distinctive modernist manner. The composition looks across a wooded valley toward a pale blue-green body of water, with the terrain descending through the center before opening toward the distant horizon. Trees and foliage dominate the foreground and middle distance, rendered in saturated tones of rust red, burnt orange, ochre, yellow, deep green and brown. Chub builds the landscape through broad, heavily worked passages of paint rather than precise naturalistic detail. The dense autumn foliage is organized into interlocking masses of color, while the cool expanse of water provides a striking visual counterpoint to the warm reds and ochres of the surrounding landscape. The elevated viewpoint and winding opening through the trees create a strong sense of depth and lead the eye toward the distant water. The reverse is inscribed in Cyrillic Осень (Autumn), 1986, together with the dimensions 40 x 50 cm. An original paper label from the Central Salon of the Art Fund of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, identifies the artist as V. I. Chub, gives the title Осень, medium and dimensions, and records an original price of 144 rubles. The survival of this period Art Fund label provides particularly useful documentation for the painting. Vladimir Chub was born in the Kuban region in 1940 and studied painting in Rostov-on-Don and later at the 1905 Memorial Art School in Moscow. He arrived in Tashkent in 1966 during reconstruction following the earthquake and subsequently made Uzbekistan his permanent home. Working as a painter, sculptor, mosaicist and monumental artist, Chub participated in numerous major architectural and decorative projects, including Tashkent Airport, the Institute of Irrigation, the Benkov Art School, Hotel Uzbekistan, the Uzbekistan Sanatorium in Sochi, and projects in Khiva and Shahimardan. He later developed and patented his own hot encaustic technique and received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan. His paintings are represented in galleries and private collections internationally, including Germany, France, Israel, the United States and Japan.
