VLADIMIR CHUB (RUSSIAN/UZBEK, B. 1940) OIL PAINTING ”EARLY SPRING”,1973 - Vladimir Chub (Russian/Uzbek, b. 1940), Early Spring (Ранн&N tilde;Ñ веснР°), 1973. Oil on board. Signed in Cyrillic ”В. Чуб” lower right. Inscribed in Cyrillic on the reverse with the artist’s name, title, date and dimensions. An expressive early landscape by Vladimir Chub depicting the countryside at the transition from winter to spring. A winding stream or partially thawed watercourse moves through the foreground and draws the eye toward an open landscape beneath a broad, cloud-filled sky. Groups of tall, slender trees rise throughout the composition, their sparse forms and subdued coloration suggesting the first stages of seasonal renewal. Chub builds the landscape with vigorous, heavily worked brushstrokes and areas of pronounced impasto. Earthy browns, ochres and deep greens dominate the foreground, while passages of yellow and pale green enliven the vegetation. The distant terrain is reduced to horizontal bands of muted color beneath a cool gray-white sky. Rather than emphasizing precise topographical detail, Chub uses the physical texture and direction of the paint to convey the movement of water, uneven ground and windblown vegetation. The painting is characteristic of Chub's interest in the landscape of Central Asia and demonstrates the increasingly expressive handling of color and surface that would become an important element of his mature work. The reverse is inscribed in Cyrillic Чуб В. И. (V. I. Chub) and Ранн&Nt ilde;Ñ веснР° (Early Spring), followed by the date 1973 and dimensions 40 x 50 cm. Vladimir Chub was born in the Kuban region in 1940 and studied painting in Rostov-on-Don and later at the 1905 Memorial Art School in Moscow. He arrived in Tashkent in 1966 during reconstruction following the earthquake and subsequently made Uzbekistan his permanent home. Working as a painter, sculptor, mosaicist and monumental artist, Chub participated in numerous major architectural and decorative projects, including Tashkent Airport, the Institute of Irrigation, the Benkov Art School, Hotel Uzbekistan, the Uzbekistan Sanatorium in Sochi, and projects in Khiva and Shahimardan. He later developed and patented his own hot encaustic technique and received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan. His paintings are represented in galleries and private collections internationally, including Germany, France, Israel, the United States and Japan.
